Toyota Motor, the biggest automaker in the world, announced it will withdraw 139,420 iQ and Prius cars internationally for defects in brakes and electric power-steering.
The company, which is based in Toyota City, Japan, will repair the problems in power-steering in 105,784 Prius gasoline-electric hybrids and also in 33,636 iQ compact cars’ brakes. In addition, Toyota Motor formed an international quality committee last 2010, headed by President Akio Toyoda, following record of recalls for problems associated to unintentional acceleration.
It also formed new centers for technology all over the globe to collect data on so-called quality problems and accelerate decision making with regard to recalls. Toyota also said that the company will withdraw 58,000 Prius cars abroad, of which 52,000 will be in the United States, and 47,784 of it in Japan.
In addition, the company added that Toyota Motor will also repair 12,000 iQ compact cars abroad, largely in the United Kingdom, and 21,636 of it in Japan. Also, the Prius sedans to be withdrawn were created between October 1997 and May 2003, while the iQ compact cars were created between September 2008 and May 2010.
Toyota Motor struggled currently against image-battering over huge withdraws of Prius and iQ cars. The company also added that the unfastened nut in the electric power-steering can cause the cars, if operated over a long period of time, to steer with extra force.
Under the withdrawing of those cars, the dealers of the company will setup upgraded nuts free of charge. Toyota Motor stated that the revamp will take about four hours depending on how busy the service department of the dealer is, and that it will inform owners with regard to the withdraw starting next month.
