Tornadoes – How Destructive can they be?

You may already be aware about the current tornado attack in Alabama last April 27. It was considered by experts as one of the most devastating tornadoes in the history of America. They already recorded some of the greatest tornadoes in the past and it is one of the most destructive.

In the United States, a tornado is not uncommon. There are tornadoes that are too weak and there are also strong or severe. However, a devastating tornado is not very common since it only appears almost once every 10 years or once every 5 years.

A tornado is actually a violent, churning maelstrom of whirling winds that can take things from the ground depending on its intensity and lift it upwards. Tornadoes are probably one of the most devastating forces of nature that can occur and strikes without any warning.

When a tornado forms, it just takes a couple of minutes before it is completely formed. However, a tornado cannot be easily detected unlike storms. It suddenly appears out of nowhere and take innocent people by surprise.

These spinning thunder storms are formed through the unique combination of cold air from the north, the warm moist air coming from the south and dry air that are coming from the dessert. These ingredients will then be sustained by strong winds and create a spinning thunder storm.

Tornadoes also have their scale depending on their intensity. They are classified from F0 to F5. The Fujita scale for tornadoes was made in 1971. It can detect the intensity of the tornado based on the damage that they inflicted on structures and vegetations on a certain area. An FO tornado is light, F1 is moderate, F2 is considerable and F3 is severe. F4 and F5 are considered as devastating. F4 tornadoes are more common than F5 but both of them do not appear frequently. Some people call the F5 tornado as the “Hand of God”. It is like a giant tornado that can take the lives of anything that crosses its path, whether it is a huge building or huge house. It can take anything on its path.

In May 3, 1999, they recorded an FB tornado in Oklahoma City. The tornado grew to be a wide spinning tornado with 300 mph traveling a distance of more than 35 miles every 40 minutes. Reports stated that this tornado caused more than 1 billion dollars of damage to the affected states and almost 36 people lost their lives. Furthermore, 580 people were injured when this tornado attacked.

The worst thing about tornadoes is that they came without warning. They instantly formed and destroy then they go. They are known as one of the most feared forces of nature.

Scientists Performs Research About Alabama Tornadoes

Reports stated that scientists are now starting to make a research program to understand the tornadoes that destroyed a lot of properties on the southeastern states.

The damaged done by the deadly tornado that damaged Alabama and the surrounding states is the main reason why scientists decided to perform a research on these tornadoes. The tornado outbreak in Alabama last April 27, 2011 is known as one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in the history of the U.S.

The scientists from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) are trying to analyze some of the data that they gathered from the day the tornadoes came and combine it to the information from detailed storm surveys and other data related to tornadoes. The scientists are hoping to know more about these storms and how they are formed. They also wanted to know how these storms became so powerful and the possible solutions to make tornado warnings more efficient and effective whenever a storm is detected.

The research of the scientists was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) via the Rapid Response Research (RAPID) grant. This grant can enable support if there in need of fast-response research to events like tornadoes or earthquakes.

According to Brad Smull, the program director in NSF’s Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, tornado detection in the area is a really challenge for authorities because of heavily forested rolling terrain and the limited public awareness. It is also said that severe weather warnings are difficult because of the terrain of the place.

Florida Senator Emphasizes Effects of Oil Spill

Florida U.S. Senator Marco Rubio emphasized the possible impact of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Senator Marco Rubio hosted a hearing with regard to the status of the coastal recovery after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He said that there are still lingering effects even if it is already been a year after the worst oil spill in the history.

This time last year, more than 2 million gallons of oil per day of the crude of British Petroleum (BP) pumped on the Gulf of Mexico. The hearing that Senator Rubio hosted was to inform the people that the impacts of oil spill will not easily disappear in just a year. He said that there are still a lot of fears on the oil that is still on the Gulf. He said that there are a lot of unknowns until now and there are possible impacts on the years to come.

Senator Rubio also said that people must not allow BP to offer money to the people. Doug Broxson, state representative, said that the company promised money that must have been paid out but it was not given.

The promise of BP is to make the Gulf Coast whole again after their oil began gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Senator Rubio was there to check if BP really kept their promise and still doing their job to clean the Gulf Coast and he was not surprise on what he found out. He said that the impacts may not be present on the current years but in the near future, these damages will already be felt by the people around the Gulf.

Alabama Tops List of Most Top Category Tornadoes Since 1950

According to reports, Federal weather officials named Alabama as the new no.1 state with the most top category tornadoes since 1950.

The National Weather Service recently updated their list of the most top category tornadoes after they named the tornado in DeKalb County as an EF-5 category tornado. The state was given seven EF-5 tornadoes since 1950. The recording of the Weather Service of the top category tornadoes started in 1950.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center, Alabama was tied with other states like Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas with six EF-5 tornadoes before the previous tornado on April 27 was classified as an EF-5 tornado.

On April 27, a tornado struck the area of Rainsville and Sylvania and another one appear in the area of Phil Campbell and Hackleburg. An EF-5 tornado is considered as the strongest kind of tornado based on the Enhanced Fuji scale. It has wind of more than 200mph and people often call it as the “Hand of God”.

After the recent appearance of the EF-5 tornado, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration worked together to produce a workshop in Fyffe on Thursday. They also planned another workshop on Saturday in Sylvania. This workshop is intended to help the survivors of the storm.

According to Michael F. Byrne, the Federal Coordinating Officer, FEMA is already working together with the Neighborhood Partnership, Faith based and community based organizations and businesses to select some areas wherein only a few applications were returned to SBA. According to Nate Custer, FEMA public information officer, storm victims can still ask for help by registering, calling or visiting the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center.

Governor of Oregon signs revamp health plan to give preventive care

John Kitzhaber, the governor of Oregon, signed in a public ceremony his striving plan to revamp the health plan of the state to concentrate in giving preventive care.

The revamp is one of the signature lawmaking accomplishments of the governor. Along with another law producing a health insurance exchange, the healthcare alteration of Kitzhaber is planned to lower the expenses of healthcare and increase the coverage to individuals who lack it.

In addition, healthcare has been one of the most fast growing costs in Oregon, and legislators faced approximately $2550 million gap in the Oregon Health Authority’s budget, which manages the state’s fund for healthcare. The gap between profits and projected costs is almost 40 percent.

According to the speech of the governor in Portland, most states are facing the same type of inconsistency have responded by merely tossing individuals under the bus, by simply dropping them from coverage. Kitzhaber also said that Oregon is building another path.

The governor added that kicking patients off of Medicaid is counterproductive since they will end up looking more costly and unpaid care in the emergency room. Kitzhaber also hopes that the state can save fund by lessening costly hospitalizations, especially on the most-expensive patients having chronic diseases.

The governor’s proposal will alter the health plan of the state from a cost-for-service model to one that recompenses physicians and other medical practitioners as they keep their patients in a good condition. Moreover, the health plan is the state’s adaptation of Medicaid, a program for low-income healthcare that is jointly supported by the federal governments and the state.

Scientists finally discover reason of dolphins’ death in Swan River

Finally, scientists discovered that an uncommon virus was the reason why some of the dolphins suddenly died in the Swan River last 2009.

It is the first time that a morbillivirus has been found in Western Australia and only the second time that the ailment has been established in any marine mammal in the country. The discovery comes after two years where six dolphins suddenly died in the Swan and Canning system between June and October 2009.

Investigations on the factors that trigger the death of those dolphins have been questionable until now. However, the dolphins were reported to be enclosed in lesions and defectively decomposed, as well as a combination of ailment, complex level of contaminants, rainfall events and impacts from human like fishing line were responsible on their death.

Today, Kerry Trayler, a scientist from Swan River Trust, stated that only two out of three dolphins were tested positive for the uncommon virus, but moribillivirus cannot be excluded in the other three dolphins. He also stated that two of the dolphins that were discovered in the Swan River were defectively decomposed that they were not capable to be examined, but findings from another dolphin also found in the river are pending.

Dr. Trayler added that it is hard to notice that pathogen in post-mortem investigation. The doctor also added that the samples sent to Ireland were taken from the Swan River dolphins that all showed some marks of lessened immune function, which normally arises when the morbillivirus is present. Moreover, some had yielded to pneumonia, one had encephalitis and some of the dolphins had ulcerative skin illness.

New pet travel decree to support UK rabies vaccine law

New regulations on pet travel will support the law of U.K. rabies vaccine across the Europe as of January 1 next year.

The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) and the British Veterinary Association (BVA) inform veterinarians to warn their clients who will travel abroad with their pets with regard to the alteration in law.

Ferrets, cats and dogs that will enter the United Kingdom must have rabies vaccine and have microchip. The owners must also wait 21 days after immunization before they can enter in the U.K. and they also must possess a European Pet Passport. The present prerequisite to do a blood test followed by six months of waiting before entry into the U.K. will not be needed.

According to Dr. Harvey Locke, the BVA’s president, it is important that any controls on animal movement are in proportion to the risk. The doctor also said that because of the well successful program of vaccination in wildlife in mainland Europe, there has been a large lessening in the occurrence of rabies.

Study done by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) tells that the danger of initiating rabies under the new regulations is extremely low. Furthermore, pets entering from a country that was not included in the list must submit a blood test 30 days after the immunization followed by a three-month waiting.

So far, the U.K. diverged from European pet travel regulations to let added controls to protect against tapeworms, ticks and rabies. The BSAVA and BVA have kept on lobbying in Europe for added controls to be upheld for tapeworms, which can initiate Echinococcus multilocularis, which makes the illness known as echinococcosis in terrestrial mammals, such as humans, dogs, coyotes, jackals, foxes and wolves.

Oklahoma plans to build new indoor facility worth $16 M

The state of Oklahoma is planning to begin building a new indoor practice facility worth $16 million this summer.

This plan has been in the works for some years now. Mike Holder, the athletic director, said on Tuesday that the building of the Sherman E. Smith Training Center will start most probably on August 1. The Cowboys will become the last team of Big 12 to have an indoor practice facility for football.

Moreover, the athletic director offered $20 million en route for what is planned to be a $50 million site when the donation was announced last January 2007, but building was constantly delayed. The training center was part of the grand plan of the university for an athletic community to be financed through a $165 million gift from T. Boone Pickens, but only overhauls to the football sports ground have been finished so far.

Pickens gave the money and at one point increased the funds to $407 million, but when the economy weakened it lost $282 million. On June 6, Smith died, and Holder stated that his family has permitted the university to use his donation to construct the training center instead of as a donation as it was initially announced.

Holder also stated that they owe another thank you to the family of Smith as they have permitted them to use their donation for the building of the indoor site. Boone Pickens has made a testamentary donation that will give for the bequest of the training center. In addition, the athletic director added that the state of Oklahoma is raising fund to compensate for turf practice fields and three grass that are already being constructed next to the facility of Smith Center, across the street from Boone Pickens Stadium.

Obama administration prolongs veto on new uranium mines around Grand Canyon

Federal officials said that the administration of President Barack Obama prolonged a veto on new uranium mine close to Grand Canyon by half a year, and it claimed to supports two decades veto on new claims.

The extension keeps in place one million acres defense on public lands near the Grand Canyon National Park to provide federal officials more time to research the impact of the two decades outlaw. A temporary veto, introduced in 2009, was set to end in July.

According to Ken Salazar, an Interior Secretary, like their antecedents, they do not know how future people in the United States will experience, enjoy and benefit from that place. Salazar, which is talking to reporters from the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona on Monday, also said that is one of the several reasons why science, prevention and wisdom must show their protection of the Grand Canyon.

In addition, the outlaw does not close existing uranium mines. Salazar added that the mining claims created before 2009, when a provisional veto was founded, will be permitted to continue. However, no new mining claims will be permitted while the outlaw is in place.

He also added that they will keep on developing uranium in the northern part of Arizona, Wyoming and other areas throughout the U.S. Salazar stated that even though two decades veto on new mining stakes is established, they expect continued progress of existing rights and the organization of new mines over the next two decades.

Salazar’s announcement was instantly condemned as killing jobs for the people in the U.S., and continuing the reliance of the country on foreign energy. On the other hand, Katie Sweeney, the general counsel of the National Mining Association claimed that the outlaw is scientifically unsupportable and puts a worrying instance.
