Medical practitioner handling the case of reality show “Survivor: Africa” winner Ethan Zohn confirmed that cancer recurred to Zohn. A representative of Zohn confirmed the report stating that doctors discovered redevelopment of cancer cells in the chest of Zohn last September. The diagnosis of Zohn was first disclosed in public by People.com.

Way back year 2009, doctors found out that Zohn is suffering from stage 2 Hodgkin’s disease. He undergone a couple of chemotherapy sessions but unfortunately cancer cells persist in making him unwell. Subsequently, he went through an innovative remedy called stem cell transplantation. He had recovered for quite some time until his doctors discovered that cancer had returned.

Hodgkin’s disease or commonly known by medical personnel as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a type of cancer affecting the white blood cells specifically the Lymphocytes. It was termed after the physician who first discovered the disease Thomas Hodgkin. Because cancer cells affect the lymphocytes then the disease may affect all systems in the body. As the disease exacerbates, it will spread from one lymph node to another.

A patient suffering from this condition may experience and present symptoms such as itchiness of the skin, excessive sweating at night, inexplicable weight loss, enlargement of lymph nodes, spleen and liver, back discomfort along with cyclical fever. On the other hand, the condition is treatable in early stage by both radiation and chemotherapy. One more advance treatment modality used in managing this disease is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In the case of Zohn, stem cells transplantation was advantageous even if his condition remitted that is quite expected in almost all type of cancer.

Following the discovery of cancer recurrence, Zohn made the decision to a more advance form of chemotherapy using the drug preparation SGN-35. SGN-35 is a drug used in chemotherapy in killing cancer cells. It is the first drug approved in managing lymphoma particularly anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Its brand name is Adcetris and its class is Anti-CD30 antibody drug conjugate. Some expert discovered that the drug presents lesser adverse effect to the patient using the drug. “Survivor” winner stated that after he completed three months of chemotherapy using SGN-35, he will submit himself for another session of stem cell transplantation.
